As summer heats up, many of us are eager to cool off with a refreshing swim. Whether you’re diving into the ocean, pool, lake, or pond, it’s crucial to keep your eyes protected. Here’s what you need to know about maintaining healthy eyes while enjoying your aquatic adventures.

NECO hosted the annual John E. Asarkof Residency Conference. The event celebrated the residency year which runs from July 1, 2023 to June 30, 2024. This was the last of four conferences throughout the year offered to all NECO Residents. NECO has 18-affiliated residency programs throughout New England that welcome 38 residents each year. Our paid programs include advanced training in community-based centers and VAs, as well as other prestigious organizations.

June is Cataract Awareness Month, a time when older adults are advised to pause and learn more about a common degenerative eye condition that typically appears in individuals starting around age 60, when proteins in the lens of the eye begin to break down resulting in a hazy appearance over time. Cataracts affect about 70% of adults by age 75, and recent data indicate more than 17% of adults above the age of 40 have at least an early form of cataract in one or both eyes. As an optometry student, you will have many opportunities to engage with professional associations and learn from clinicians who are practicing in specialty areas. One such area is vision therapy, or vision development. Students interested in this area can join NECO’s chapter of the College of Optometrists in Vision Development (COVD) group. This group is connected with the larger international non-profit association of optometrists, optometry students, and vision therapists. Each year, COVD hosts a summit meeting and conference for practitioners to present their research and gives the opportunity for everyone in the field to come together and learn about the latest advances in vision development.
