The NECO Lions Club is a non-profit organization that gives back to the community by fundraising within the school and donating the proceeds to great causes/charities. Club members also go on vision screenings and other volunteer events with the Greater District Lions to provide our services to underserved communities.
The NECO Lions Club is dedicated to the Lions’ motto of “We Serve” and volunteer their time and talents towards eye research and the betterment of the community. This mission began with a challenge by Helen Keller at the Lions 1925 International Convention at Cedar Point, Ohio, when she asked the Lions to become the “Knights of the Blind” and eliminate all preventable blindness in the world. We invite one and all to join the NECO Lions Club and help carry forth the inspiring words of Helen Keller.
The NECO Lions Club donates to the National Braille Press, the premier braille publisher in the country. All the funds are used to provide literary resources to the blind, and in so doing, help to empower individuals with vision loss by greatly improving access to information. The NECO Lions Club meets on a monthly basis.
Projects include supporting the local community by working jointly with other Boston area Lions Clubs to provide eye and general health screenings through the Lions Eye Mobile community outreach project, participation in the annual 5K Blindfold Challenge, and providing book-binding services to the National Braille Press for children’s braille books. Bilingual Lions have given presentations about eye care to senior citizens with other Boston Lions Clubs. Additionally, donations of glasses have been made to VOSH and local homeless shelters.
The NECO Lions Club is one of the biggest student organizations within the school, and we are a part of an even greater organization with a strong presence all over the world with 1.4 million members internationally.
