On Friday, January 20th, the Student Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity (SVOSH) group held their biggest fundraiser of the year, VOSH Night. The student-run chapter at NECO (New England College of Optometry) works with VOSH-International to preserve sight and to educate the general public about the profession of optometry and the importance of regular eye examinations. SVOSH members travel to a developing country each year with advisor Dr. Bina Patel and other clinicians to provide vision care services to those in need. Their goal is to help eradicate untreated refractive error and improve the quality of life.

This year, SVOSH will be sending 24 students from NECO to the Dominican Republic from March 31, 2017 - April 7, 2017. The biggest fundraiser the group holds is the annual VOSH Night at the College to raise money for airfare, lodging, and other expenses while on the VOSH trip.

VOSH hired professionals to run casino games such as black jack, roulette, and poker which students were able to play with funny money. Dr. Bastian, Dr. Ho, and Dr. Hanley hosted Bingo games with prizes such as a Volk Lens and Ray-Ban sunglasses.

Toward the end of the night, the funny money was exchanged for raffle tickets. There were over 40 raffle prizes including Paint Bar tickets, Dinner on a Boston Harbor Cruise, a free pool party at Jillian's, gift cards to restaurants such as Joe's American Grill, free yoga lessons, and many more!

“VOSH Night is our largest fundraiser each year, and is an important piece of how we pay for our annual trip. We're grateful for the incredible support we receive from faculty and staff, as well as for the many students and donors who make VOSH Night a reality. We're also thankful for the NECO community putting aside their studying for an evening to support a good cause!" shared Micaela Gobielle, Class of 2018, President of SVOSH NECO. The organization was able to raise around $4,000 which will all be dedicated to their 2017 trip to the Dominican Republic.
