On Sunday, December 18, 2016, over 4,000 families and children from local area shelters and temporary housing gathered at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center to celebrate the Christmas in the City event. Christmas in the City is a yearly event started in 1987 to help alleviate the impact of homelessness during holiday season. The festivities include a holiday party with lunch, entertainment, a visit from Santa, and presents donated by the community. An indoor theme park included a rock-climbing wall, roller coaster, minigolf and petting zoo.
In addition to the entertainment, local organization provided services for the guests. The New England College of Optometry’s mobile clinic was invited to provide vision screenings to the guests. Clinical faculty and students from New England College of Optometry volunteered their time to conduct the screenings. Attending were Drs. Hannis and Cavallerano, assisted by NECO students Caroline Bui, Kam Luoi Chow, Julie Phan, coordinator, Ina Carducci and van driver, Leroy Ross.
