ASIP and AODP Class of 2016 White Coat Ceremony

Inaugural white coat ceremony for NECO’s Advanced Standing International Program and Advanced Optometric Degree Program

On Friday, January 16, 2016, NECO hosted its inaugural white coat ceremony for the Class of 2016 for the Accelerated Optometric Degree Program (AODP) and the Advanced Standing International Program (ASIP). At NECO, the second year students are presented with a white coat to wear at health centers, clinics, and hospitals for their rotations. This ceremony marks increased responsibility for more detailed clinical work.

At the ceremony, Associate Dean of Students Barbara McGinley welcomed the group and President Scott delivered the Duty to Care address. President of the Alumni Association Bill Gleason shared some clinical insights with the group. This was followed by a recognition of ASIP students by Dr. Bina Patel and a recognition of AODP students by Dr. Frank Thorn. Dean Barry Fisch presented the privileging letters and delivered the closing remarks.

The Accelerated Optometric Degree Program (AODP) is an accelerated program for qualified applicants with either an earned doctorate in one of the biological, behavioral, or physical sciences, or a doctoral-level health profession degree. AODP students follow an intense twenty-seven month curriculum, which includes one year of clinical externship rotations. Course work centers on optometry concepts and skills, and ocular disease. This year, six second year AODP students received their white coats: Lin Guo, Christina Lord, Eric Moulton, Chao Sun, Jiayi Zhou and Xiaohong Zhou.

The Advanced Standing International Program (ASIP) at NECO is designed for international optometrists who are pursuing a US doctor of optometry degree. Applicants to the ASIP must have graduated and received a bachelor’s degree in optometry from an accredited recognized international optometric school. ASIP students follow an intense two year curriculum, which includes one year of clinical externship rotations. Course work centers on basic sciences, disease, and advanced optometry skills and concepts. This year, seven ASIP second year students received their white coats: Gerard Cairns, Fatima Hussain, Jia Jiann Liaw, Jyotsna Maram, Sathyasri Narasimhan, Pritesh Patel, Alisha Rhemu, and Boris Severinsky.
