ACK Eye is Nantucket’s only full-time year-round eyecare provider, and we need another doctor.
If you know Nantucket, you already know the magic of our island… If not, here’s the quick synopsis: our little island is 30 miles off the coast of Cape Cod, at the southeastern edge of Massachusetts. We have spectacular restaurants, incredible sailing & saltwater fishing, and some of the most amazing beaches in the world. We have a year-round population of about twenty thousand people, and during the summer, our population blossoms to over fifty thousand. During the height of tourist season, like the week around the Fourth of July, we often reach eighty thousand people. So, as the island’s only year-round, full-time eyecare providers, we see it all, including the vast majority of eye concerns that present to the local hospital’s Emergency Department. Clinical life is never boring, and you’ll have the opportunity to use all the skills and education you have acquired. My glaucoma practice is growing rapidly, and we co-manage our patients’ surgical needs with Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston at their Cape Cod offices.
ACK Eye is owned and run by me, Mike Ruby. I graduated from PCO in 1993 and completed Residency in 1994. I worked at a variety of optometry /ophthalmology group practices in the greater Boston area, including Nantucket, and I taught at PCO’s International Studies department part-time before I purchased this practice in 2008 and moved to Nantucket full-time in 2009. In addition to running ACK Eye, I am a charter fishing Captain, I co-own a tackle shop on the island with a few of my charter Captain friends, and I teach saltwater fly casting. My wife Amy and I have been married since 2013 and live close to the office with our two dogs.
Currently at ACK Eye, we have eight full-time employees and one other doctor part-time, Jessica Gage, OD (NECO ’03). I see patients three and a half days a week, and Dr. Gage is in the office one day each week. We performed over six thousand patient visits last year. We work with all major health insurance carriers, but do not participate in any managed care plans. We are currently booking into September and our waiting list is several hundred names long. We have three lanes with digital imaging slit lamps, iCare tonometer, DGH Pachy & B-Scan, Optovue Avanti OCT, HFA3, Canon CR2+, Lipiscan/Lipiflow, and Lumenis M22 IPL.
Ideally, we are looking for an OD with Residency training, due to our high volume of pathology and emergency cases, but with my clinical teaching experience, I would be happy to assist with complicated pathology for a recent grad without Residency training. We could accommodate full-time or part-time, and would be able to assist with air travel or ferry commuting for a part-time associate. Partial ownership, or work-to-ownership is also feasible. The practice owns two additional homes on the island that we use for employee housing and thus we would potentially be able to help with the logistics of your transition to the island.
