The Cochrane Library is a unique source of reliable and up-to-date information on the effects of interventions in health care. The Cochrane Library is designed to provide information and evidence to support decisions taken in health care and to inform those receiving care. Over 4000 systematic reviews and protocols constitute the Cochrane Reviews database. In addition, there is access to information on over 454,000 controlled trials by searching the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trial. The Cochrane Library also contains 5 additional databases.

Searching for a citation you need right now? Use PubMed from the the
library's link,
and you'll notice something new in the results area.
By choosing the "necolib" tab, you will limit your retrieval to the
journals in the library and the titles we have access to online.
Any questions about this or any other PubMed feature? Let us know.

The Library now offers access to
Scopus.
This unique new navigational product from Elsevier provides access to over 25
million abstracts from over 14,000 titles across 4,000 publishers on many
scientific and medical topics. Scopus improves the literature review process for
researchers and students through linking citing and cited documents forwards and
backwards in time.
Many of the citations of the last five to ten years will bring up both the
abstract and the list of References from the article. For such articles, you can
read the full text if the Library has subscription rights to it, list all the
articles that have cited it, or review the references for that article.
References include links to the cited article and its abstract and also list the
number of times that Reference has been cited. You can then go to that cited
article or list all the articles that cite it.
The easiest way to see how this works is just use Scopus and take a look.
If you have any questions, just email Cindy Hutchison at hutchisonc@neco.edu.

The College community now has access to the COS Funding Opportunities
database. This is a database compiled by the Community of Science and contains
over 23,000 opportunities. These opportunities range from grants, scholarships,
funding for special programs, travel to professional meetings, program or
curriculum development and others. The sponsors of the grants includes
government (federal, state, local), foundations, non-profits, commercial,
professional associations and others.
This is available on-campus with no need for a user id and password. Off-campus,
you will use your email user ID and password as is done for the other electronic
resources offered by the Library.
If you have any problems, questions, or would just like some help searching the
database, email Cindy Hutchison hutchisonc@neco.edu.

The latest addition to the Library’s collection of electronic resources is a set of color atlases published by Thieme. In all there are 21 titles including such titles as Color Atlas of Neuroscience: neuroanatomy and neurophysiology, Color Atlas of Pathophysiology or Color Atlas of Human Anatomy. For the Library’s full collection of E-Books, see http://www.neco.edu/library/resources/Ebooks.aspx
We have a new Online Catalog with a new look and feel. New features include:
The Library has acquired access to RefWorks, a web-based citation management program. With RefWorks, you can easily organize, search and display your citations. You can find it here. If you have any questions, contact us at (617) 587-5589.
The library now has access to JSTOR - Mathematics and Statistics Collections. This resource gives us access to the full-text of the backfiles (in many cases back to vol. 1) of a number of the core journals in math and statistics. Access to current issues is delayed by 3-5 years depending on the individual title.
The library is now offering access to VisionCite, a citation index to the vision science literature compiled by Illinois College of Optometry Library. Similar in purpose to Visionet, VisionCite contains citations to over 178,000 articles from 1984 to the present. Over 110 periodicals are regularly indexed and about 12,000 citations are added each year. A username and password are required for access. Access is restricted to Current NEWENCO students, faculty, & staff. For a password, please call the library at (617) 587-5589 or e-mail us at journalsadmin@neco.edu.
The library has recently acquired electronic access to Visual Impairment Research and Optometry and Vision Science.
NEWENCO faculty, residents, and students authored 28 posters for the American Academy of Optometry annual meeting held December 12-15, 2002 in San Diego, California. Each week a different poster will be featured in the Library. Click to view the poster schedule (pdf). Marek Jacisin, Educational Media Coordinator designed this exhibit.
The Library offers two new electronic resources for use by the College community -- a College Image Database and an Ocular Image Database. Both these searchable databases gather together local images and make them available for College use. Each of the collections of images is a work in progress.
Not only are they available for your use but also available for your contributions! Both databases contain about 65 images but will grow with your interest. If you have images you would want to contribute to these databases, please contact Cindy Hutchison, Library Director at (617) 266-2030 x5344 or Marek Jacisin, Educational Media Coordinator at x5335.
You can now limit your PubMed searches to items that the Library owns or has access to. Start from our new PubMed/NEWENCO Journals search page.
A list of materials recently added to the collection can be viewed at the new books list found in the Library's Online Catalog.
The library purchases the OVID search engine for Faculty and Students to search MEDLINE and CURRENT CONTENTS - LIFE SCIENCES. Each month, OVID allows free access to selected database search engines. Most of the databases featured will duplicate MEDLINE to a greater or lesser extent. The Library would, however, be interested in your opinion concerning the usefulness of these databases. The Library welcomes your input.
Due to budget cuts in the Massachusetts Regional
Library System, the following databases are no longer available as of
January 2003:
Business and Company Resource Center
Health and Wellness Resource Center
InfoTrac OneFile
Predicast PROMT
Please note that many of the journals that were available in these databases
are still available in other Gale databases. For example: All of the
journals available in Health and Wellness Resource Center are available in
Health Reference Center - Academic.
To see the list of Gale Group databases available please visit:
http://www.neco.edu/Library/resources/bibdatabases.aspx.
If you have any questions about accessing the Gale Group databases or
changes that have taken place, please contact the Library at
library@neco.edu, or
(617) 587-5589.

Sign-up for Library workshops online; review online and paper resources; find information on bibliographic citation; PowerPoint Poster and Web Page creation tutorials are available, and more.
PubMed
has recently implemented two exciting features to MEDLINE searches:
1. Limit Searches
to NEWENCO Journals:
Limit your PubMed searches to items held by the NEWENCO Library using the
command "loprovnecolib [filter]" and combining it with your regular
searches:

or by combining searches in the History tab:
To
begin a search with a local holdings search, use the following URL:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?holding=necolib&cmd=Search&db=PubMed&term=loprovnecolib[filter]
2. Local holdings icons in the abstract/citation view:
Using the PubMed links from the Library Web pages (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?holding=necolib)
will allow you to see what journals are available both in print and online
through the Library. You must be in either the citation or abstract
display to see these icons.
The article is available in
the Library's print collection.
Link out directly to the
full-text of the article on the publisher's Web site.
These features are still being tested by the PubMed team. More
improvements are expected. If you have any questions or comments
regarding local holdings in PubMed, please contact the Library (library@neco.edu)
617-587-5589.
The Library has prepared a new
eBooks page
which provides a list of the Library's collection of subscription and free
electronic books available including:
AHFS drug information (STAT!Ref)
Current medical diagnosis & treatment
(STAT!Ref)
eMedicine (Free)
Ophthalmic Drug Facts (OVID)
The Wills Eye Manual
(OVID)
If you have any questions or suggestions regarding the eBook collection or a specific resource, please ask a Librarian, (JournalsAdmin@neco.edu), (617) 587-5589.
Now current student, faculty, and staff
members can access selected full-text electronic journals, books and databases
through the Library's new Off-Campus Service.
When you see the
[Off-campus access] note next to a hyperlink on the Library Web pages, it
means you are able to use the Off-Campus
Service to access this resource.
