Clinical Education
The New England College of Optometry offers a superior clinical education that introduces the aspiring optometrist to a richly diverse patient base in a variety of settings. The clinical curriculum starts in the first few weeks of the first year with vision screenings and clinical observations. Vision screenings provide a perfect opportunity for students to utilize their newly acquired skills and knowledge while providing an important public health service. Observations allow students to not only become familiar with different practice settings and communication styles of experienced optometrists, but provide hands on demonstration of clinical techniques. In the second year, students are assigned to a variety of clinical settings and take on increasing examination responsibilities, reflecting their steadily increasing knowledge base and technical skill level. The third year of the program emphasizes comprehensive optometric eye care, as students become responsible for performing complete eye examinations with assignments in community health centers, college-owned clinical facilities, elementary school-based clinics, hospital-based practices, private practices, and Veterans Affairs hospitals. The final year experience is spent in 4, 3 month long assignments in full time patient care. Students play an important role in determining their final year assignments through a selection process in which they are encouraged to consider their educational goals and submit assignment preference rankings. Student clinicians work under the careful supervision of faculty mentors who help them refine their clinical skills and cultivate substantial knowledge in specialty areas of interest. The student clinicians work in a variety of clinical environments: from hospitals to private practices to community health centers, that allow them to participate in contemporary health care modes of practice. The New England College of Optometry’s unique clinical program puts students on the forefront of community-based, collaborative care; emphasizing the important role optometrists play in developing patient-centered health care models.
