OD/PhD Dual Degree Program Admissions

Designed for the student interested in a career in optometric research, the OD/PhD Dual Degree Program results in an OD degree from NECO and a PhD from Boston University’s Division of Graduate Medical Sciences.

Applicants may apply to this program simultaneously with application to the Doctor of Optometry. Students already enrolled in NECO’s Doctor of Optometry Program may also apply during their first year at NECO.

Application Fees

There is no additional fee charge for application to the OD/PhD Dual Degree Program at NECO. The 4 Year Program application fees are:

  • OptomCAS Application Fee: $160
    There is a non-refundable centralized application fee of $160 (plus $60 for each additional school).

  • NECO Supplemental Application Fee: $65
    An additional non-refundable supplemental application fee of $65 will be due to NECO in order to process your application. The fee can be paid either by credit card online or by sending a check or money order to: The New England College of Optometry, Office of Admissions, 424 Beacon Street, Boston, MA 02115.
    Submit NECO Supplemental Application Fee payment online through Paypal.

Your application will not be processed until we receive your application fee. Please note that there is a $25 service charge for NSF checks and a $50 fee for checks that are not drawn on a US bank.

  • OAT Test Fee: $390
    The cost of taking the OAT is $390. This fee allows for five official reports. Visit the OAT’s website for details. 

Application Deadlines

With Doctor of Optometry Application

A separate application for the Doctor of Optometry program must be submitted by October 1 of the year preceding your desired matriculation date for the OD program, through OptomCAS’s website.

The deadline for the NECO Graduate Programs application is January 15 of the year of your desired matriculation date.

As a First Year NECO Student

Students already enrolled in the Doctor of Optometry program must submit a complete graduate programs application by January 15 during the first year of the Doctor of Optometry program. Transcripts and OAT scores may be released through the NECO Registrar’s Office.

Boston University PhD Application

Once you have been notified that the admissions and graduate committees have recommended you for admission to the OD/PhD Dual Degree Program, you must complete the BU online PhD program application by February 15 through the Division of Graduate Medical Sciences at Boston University for a decision by March 31.

Candidate Interviews

Applicants who are currently applying to the Doctor of Optometry program will be interviewed for this program during the Doctor of Optometry program interview. Current first year NECO students will be interviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Decision Dates

Applicants newly accepted into the Doctor of Optometry program will receive a recommendation decision from NECO by February 1 and a decision from BU by March 31.
