When you become a student at NECO, you join a vibrant academic community that values a patient-centered, scientifically-based curriculum that allows students to discover, explore, and develop their personal and professional competencies as optometrists. Our success is predicated on the success of our students and alumni – as exemplary practitioners of optometry, as thought leaders in their profession, and as inspired doctors dedicated to the advancement of visual and ocular health in the communities they serve.
Join our Community
We recruit and admit socially minded, intellectually curious, and compassionate students with the demonstrated academic credentials and interpersonal competencies necessary to achieve excellence in the practice of optometry. We carefully shape each class to provide our students with a unique academic, clinical and student life experience. We admit students who will thrive and contribute to the rigorous yet highly personalized learning environments that are the hallmarks of our campus, classrooms, labs, and clinics. Our promise is individualized attention for each student, and our admissions process reflects this promise, while serving as an introduction to the NECO community.
An Investment in the Future
The admissions process is an investment we make in each other. Employment of optometrists will continue to grow from 2010 to 2020, and more optometrists will be needed to meet the health needs of an aging population. NECO is preparing the next generation of optometrists, eager to navigate the future of health and patient care, and dedicated to the highest standards of our profession.
Our Admissions Process
All applicants to four-year optometric programs now utilize the OptomCAS web application process. Using one, centralized process, applicants can enter their data through OptomCAS and utilize the system to apply to various optometric colleges. ASIP and AODP candidates submit their applications directly to the Admissions Office.
Upon submission, the Admissions Committee reviews applications against NECO admission standards. Selected candidates are invited to come to the College for an interview. Personal interviews are required for admission. Admissions decisions are finalized within three weeks of the interview. Learn more about the admissions process.
I chose NECO for many reasons. First, there was the allure of the clinical program- I wanted to immerse myself in the patient care experience as soon as possible and in a diverse environment and that's exactly what NECO offers. Second, there is the city of Boston, a young, fun, beautiful city with a lot of culture to offer.
I ultimately chose to attend NECO because of the emphasis they put on clinical education. Other schools make you do years of didactic work before they put you in an exam room with a patient and I felt like the best way for me to develop personally was to be confronted with real patients with real problems.
