Impacting Students, Schools, and Communities Around the World

To respond to the growing needs of international optometry, the New England College of Optometry established the Center for the International Advancement of Optometry (CIAO) in 1994. Through this center, the New England College of Optometry has been able to impact the profession internationally.

Center for International Advancement in Optometry

Through degree programs for international students, a Visiting Scholars programs, student exchange programs and clinical externship programs, students and faculty have been able to interact, collaborate, and learn from one another. They have also been able to influence optometry around the world. International programs are supported by the college faculty and many participate in teaching abroad.

CIAO’s Mission

The Center for the International Advancement of Optometry’s Mission is to promote access to high quality and comprehensive eye and vision care for underserved populations around the world.

To achieve this mission the Center will:

  • Help other nations develop models of eye care delivery appropriate to local conditions
  • Enhance the skills and knowledge of Optometrists currently working in other countries
  • Enhance the skills and knowledge of Optometric educators teaching in other countries
  • Promote a concern for ethical training and care.

I forget just how fortunate I am to be living in Boston and attending optometry school. Student organizations like VOSH are great reminders of what you can do to give back.
