With its main site currently located not far from the original Commonwealth Avenue clinic site, the College’s network of clinics and clinical affiliates has expanded to include sites throughout the greater Boston area. The network changed names from New England Eye network to the New England College of Optometry (NECO) Clinical Network in early 2017. Today, the NECO Clinical Network is the largest provider of ambulatory eye and vision care services in Massachusetts, with 85,000 patient visits per year. In addition to NECO Clinical Network, the College’s nationwide network of affiliated clinical sites for fourth year externships has grown to include over 150 clinics, hospitals, and specialized care facilities, including three sites in other countries. With each student providing care to patients in need during his/her education at the College, New England College of Optometry continues to fulfill one its original missions – to provide outstanding patient care to those who need it.
The future looks bright for New England College of Optometry. The College continues in its dedication to excellent patient care and its forward-thinking approach to educating today’s optometrist. This philosophy can be seen in the implementation of a curriculum that trains students to complete a full eye exam by the end of their second year of optometry school. It is also evidenced in the working relationships the College is forming with other colleges and universities, with a goal of providing education and patient care that allows collaboration among health science professionals and disciplines. NECO’s clinical affiliations are ever-expanding and the College continually attracts talented faculty and students. NECO is now considered a leader in optometry and optometric education throughout the world.
